Reports indicate that Meta's superintelligence division is forming a dedicated hardware team and has recruited senior engineer Rui Xu as the lead. The Reality Labs division under Meta, known for its smart glasses and virtual reality headsets, suggests that Meta is planning to launch other types of AI-powered devices. Rui Xu previously led the hardware operations at AI agent startup Dreamer, whose founding team was acquired by Meta last month.
According to BusinessInsider, $Meta Platforms (META.US)$Meta Platforms' superintelligence division is forming an exclusive hardware team and recruiting a senior engineer to lead the initiative. This move represents a significant strategic step by Meta Platforms to deepen its presence in the AI hardware sector.
Meta’s Reality Labs division is well-known for its smart glasses and virtual reality headsets. This new initiative falls under Meta's Superintelligence Lab (MSL). The high-profile AI division was announced last year, signaling Meta's intention to introduce other types of AI-powered devices.
According to sources cited by the media, this plan had not been previously reported. Some engineers from Reality Labs have already transferred to MSL, where they are responsible for prototyping AI department software on Reality Labs hardware. The two departments are working closely together. Meta is currently recruiting Rui Xu to lead MSL’s hardware division. Rui Xu previously led the hardware operations at AI agent startup Dreamer, whose founding team was acquired by Meta last month.
According to The Information, prior to joining Dreamer, Rui Xu served as the Chief Operating Officer of robotics startup K-Scale, which shut down last year. Nat Friedman, head of MSL’s Product and Application Research division, had invested in K-Scale through his co-founded AI Grant program.
Currently, tech giants such as OpenAI are racing to develop a truly AI-centric personal device, rather than merely an alternative to smartphones.
In February this year, MSL head Alexandr Wang stated in a podcast that Meta aims to push beyond the boundaries of mobile phones and move toward an era where everyone has personalized AI agents—these agents will be embedded in a 'constellation' of devices surrounding users.
You will want your personal AI agent to accompany you in various ways—it will always be online, seeing what you see and hearing what you hear. In the coming months, you will witness us advancing at an astonishing pace.
